Courtney is a designer, entrepreneur and lifelong creative whose career has spanned more than three decades. At the center of all of her work is the simple belief that design can improve the way we live. Growing up with learning disabilities Courtney discovered that her strength was in creativity. She studied ceramics and architecture at Bennington College where she developed a unique interdisciplinary approach that has shaped everything she has built since.
After graduating in 1990 Courtney headed west to Colorado settling in Telluride, where she immersed herself in mountain culture working as a ski lift operator and clothing designer. Later she moved to San Francisco founding a furniture design company, but her love of the mountains pulled her back to Colorado. Here she set up building custom homes, raising her family and launching a handcrafted ceramics business.
Her desire to design products that can protect what we love developed after her daughter suffered a massive stroke during a school trip. Months spent alongside her in pediatric neuro-intensive care gave Courtney a deep understanding of traumatic brain injury and the importance of protecting against it. Years later on a family trip to Italy the idea for Lowdown was sparked with her brother: how do we create helmets that offer the uncompromised protection and style.
Today, Courtney is focused on making helmets people genuinely want to wear. Lowdown has enabled her to bring together everything that has defined her career so far: creativity, resilience, entrepreneurship and a belief that great design has the power to change lives.
