How Should A Ski Helmet Fit

October 1, 2026

A good helmet fit should feel snug, but never restrictive.

Don't wear bulky layers beneath your helmet to avoid pressure points.

All-day comfort is enhanced with adjustable straps and plush padding.

A helmet can have all the features in the world, but if it's uncomfortable, moves around, interferes with goggles or spends half the day in the lodge, its not a good helmet…for you.

‍
Firstly, you’ll want to open a hard-ear helmet by pulling away at the lowest end of the shell over the ears and sliding it, from forehead to rear, over your head. If you can get one or two finger tips between the helmet liner and your forehead in a snug manner, you’re on the right track. Once placed, you shouldn’t feel any pressure points or ‘hot spots’ around the corners, temples, crown or top of the head. We don’t recommend wearing anything under your helmet as they are very warm and breathe correctly as designed. If you do prefer to wear something, ensure it is a very thin balaclava or beanie composed of lightweight and breathable materials, that also allows for the correct fit, offering very slight rotation in the event of a crash.

‍
Throughout the day a helmet should settle in with the heat expired from your head. Over time, it will come to fit like a good ski boot as well due to this same effect. Our boxed earpad shape and plush liners should alleviate any pressure points and allow your ears to sit naturally, without being pressed into the sides of the helmet. The felt liner covering the chin strap and ample adjustment capabilities will keep the helmet secure without causing irritation to the skin on the throat, chin or jaw areas.

About Lowdown Helmets

LowDown Helmets is a unique family-owned ski and snowboard helmet company nestled in Carbondale, Colorado. Our journey began with a once in a lifetime family trip to Italy, where the charm of old-school classic retro-style motorcycle helmets ignited our inspiration. From that moment, the vision of blending that sleek retro look with modern safety standards and unparalleled comfort took root, paving the way for our venture into the world of ski and snowboarding helmets. In a market dominated by a few major brands focusing primarily on function and safety, we recognized a gap – the need for style. LowDown Helmets emerged to bridge that gap, offering a full-coverage helmet meticulously hand made in small batches in Italy. Our commitment goes beyond just safety; we bring you a helmet with a cool and unique aesthetic, redefining the way you approach winter sports gear. Our fundamental drive is to see more helmets on more heads, emphasizing both safety and style. We aspire to create ski and snowboard helmets that you not only wear for protection but also because you genuinely want to.
